Origins According to tradition the Founding Ancestor of this family is David, a son of Rollo "the Dane", Duke of Normandy (+ ante/ca.840), and certainly this family's Armorial Bearings support such tradition as was recorded by Edmonson, Mowbray Herald who derived it from one drawn up by Sir Mathew Seneger, Antiquary to King [Missing XREF c-tudor64032] from documents then (ca.1485) extant. "Whilst I hesitate to regard it as reliable, there may be a substratum of truth in it" [Missing XREF c-fowke68827], the family's main historian, has written. [Missing XREF c-fowke68872] accompanied his kinsmen to England, in 1066 fought at the Battle of Hastings. His son [Missing XREF c-fowke68873] is also referred to in the "Battle Abbey Rolls" recording those times. The lineage of this Family may however be said to have become only "established" following the "Herald's Visitation to Staffordshire" of 1403 and 1438.
