Ross

Origins

The Gaelic name for promontory, "Ross", taken from the lands beyond the Kyle of Sutherland in Scotland, i.e. Easter Ross, has given its name also to a clan, whose chiefship originates in 1215 when Fearchar Mac an t-Sagairt (Farquhar the Priest's Son), + 1250/1, subsequently created Earl of Ross, assisted Kg. Alexander II. against the heirs of the old celtic dynasty that had been been disinherited by the usurpation of the sons Kg. Malcolm III. and his second wife Queen Margaret.
