Sinclair

Origins

Ian Grimble states that the name of this family "derives from Saint-Clair-sur-Elle in Normandy, and was established in Scotland when Henry de St Clair was granted lands in Lothian in 1162". Sir William Sinclair, his descendant, was guardian to King Alexander III. of Scotland's heir and was granted the barony of Rossylyn in 1280, thus establishing this Family firmly on Scottish soil.
