Origins "The story I was told - no doubt it came from Dick Walker - was that the family came from Yorkshire. There were two brothers. How they got to Scotland I don't know. Perhaps the generations may be mixed up. In Scotland they founded 'Johnny Walker's Whisky'. One of them sold his brother his share for £100 pounds, a fact his descendents always naturally regretted. With his £100 this brother - Percy I think was his name, the name after which always the eldest was named - founded the firm 'Dormeiulle blankets', in the 1960s sold out to some conglomerate. Like so many family concerns founded in early victorian times, unable to change their ways they'd long since collapsed into a genteel decadence. They had become Gentlemen."(PvM) |
