Historic place of historical or cultural heritage significance or value.] The Church of the Holy Innocents at Mount Peel Station was a gift to the community by John Barton Arundel Acland (1823-1904) and consecrated by his father-in-law, Bishop Henry John Chitty Harper, in 1869. " "Acland and his partner Charles G. Tripp (1820-97) were devout churchmen. They were one of the first runholders in South Canterbury and took up Mt Peel Station in 1855. Tripp later took up the Orari Gorge Station. Bishop Harper conducted services at their homesteads in 1857 and 1858 when he made pastoral tours on horseback accompanied by his son Henry and was escorted by Tripp across the treeless Canterbury plain and the Rangitata River." Charles George TRIPP, 1826-1897, a barrister, came out with J. B. A. ACLAND on the Royal Stuart in 1855. Both worked on runs to gain experience and applied for 114,000 acres of land west of the Rangitata River. This partnership ended in 1862, with Acland retaining Mt Peel and Tripp taking Orari Gorge Station. Tripp leased the Orari Gorge run to Robert Smith and went to England. In 1863 Tripp sold the property to a cousin but brought the property back in 1865 and returned to it in 1866. The Tripp family still occupy the property today. C.G.Tripp married Ellen Shepherd Harper, daughter of Bishop Harper and sister of Emily d. 1905. Charles Howard Tripp was born at Mount Peel in 1859. Emily Weddell Harper, eldest daughter of Bishop Harper, married J B A Acland 17 Jan 1860 and they had 10 children. The Harper family had arrived at Lyttelton in Dec. 1856 on the "Egmont." Ellen and Charles Tripp returned to the Old Country for a visit and returned to NZ on the Ivanhoe. There is a column in the Christchurch Cathedral that was the gift of Mr J.B.A. Acland. Mr Acland J.P. was responsible for the erection of churches at Mt Peel, Peel Forest and Fendalton. He owned 14 acres in Fendalton. From 1864 to 1899 he represented South Canterbury in the Legislative Council. In 1864 he was elected to the Geraldine Roads Board and was Chairman of the Mount Peel Roads Board from 1875 to 1900. L.D.G. Acland (1876-1948) s/o Thomas Dyke Acland. Thomas was the s/o Peter Leopold Dyke Acland. Peter was a brother to J. B.A. Acland. Leo m. Emily Harper. Pleasant Point
