Served in Burma, 1852-3 (medal), Indian Mutiny, 1857-8: commanded a troop of 3rd Oudh Irregular Cavalry, in the advance on Cawnpore (horse shot under him), appointed Acting ADC to General Neill, raised and horsed Volunteer Cavalry under Neill, served in the action of 2nd March, 1858, the attack on Belwar Fort, the actions of Amara (5th March), Thelga (17th April), Amara (25th April, and the capture of Fort Nagar (medal and Brevet promotion). Samuel Cornwallis Amesbury, Bengal Army Born 21st November, 1832. Educated at the Middlesex Hospital and King's College London. MRCS 1854. Assistant Surgeon, 14th January, 1855. LRCP Edinburgh, 1860. FRCS Edinburgh, 1866. Surgeon, 11th January, 1867. Surgeon Major, 1st July, 1873. Brigade Surgeon, 3rd December, 1883. Retired (with "extra pension"), 30th April, 1890.
