Irina Mikhailovna Baronova 1919 - 2008
Irina Mikhailovna Baronova , Prima Ballerina Assolutta. One of the 3 baby ballerinas of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. (George Balanchine was instrumental in starting the "Baby Ballerinas"). One of the trio of ballerinas who joined the Ballets Russes in Monte Carlo in 1932 and were christened the "baby ballerinas" by English dance writer Arnold Haskell. There is a photograph of her dated ca 1944 at http://www.archiveautographs.com/frames/photos/baranova.htm moved to Paris during childhood. There she studied with Olga Preobrajenska and made her debut with the Paris Opera in 1930. George Balanchine noticed Irina as he watched classes and engaged her at age 13 for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo in 1932. Baronova studied with two ballerinas from Tsarist Russia, attending the Paris studio of Olga Preobrajenska, and learning mime from Tamara Karsavina. She was coached by four choreographers who worked for the founder of the first Ballets Russes company, Serge Diaghilev - Michel Fokine, Bronislava Nijinksa, George Balanchine and Leonide Massine. She created roles in Leonide Massine's Les Prâesages, Jeux d'enfants, Beau Danube, and Bronislava Nijinska's Les cent baisers. In 1940 she joined Ballet Theater and she married Gerry Sevastianov, one of the directors. Baronova also appeared in films and musicals, and was a guest artist with the Original Ballet Russe.
