The head-and-shoulders portrait depicts Mr. Bellew with fair hair and blue eyes, facing right. He wears a charcoal grey jacket, yellow waistcoat and white stock against a cloud background. 5 1/2 cms. diameter (2 1/4 inches). Ebonised wooden frame with brass slip. The reverse reads, "Robert Bellew, Esq. of Ballin*** (Cork) my fath-grandfather (initals)". Colours bright. Both portrait and frame are in very good condition. Provenance: By family descent The artist, Frederick Buck, was born in Cork in 1771, where he had a large successful practice. This miniature demonstrates one of the many interesting characterist of Buck's work in that the background has been painted upon the reverse of the ivory. Examples of Buck's work may be seen in many private and public collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Buck died in either 1839 or 1840.
