Gustavus/Suffield Browne 1687 - 1737
Gustavus/Suffield Browne , clerk of Leasthorpe in Pickwell, co. Leicester [Paget gives him as "Gustavus Browne or Suffield Browne". Burke's History of the Commoners (1838), published within the lifetime of Mary (Browne) Burnaby, describes her as daughter of Rev. William Browne, rector and patron of Burrow, and "grandaughter of Suffield Browne, of Leasthorpe Hall, in the county of Leicester". The Victoria County History (Leicestershire, Vol V, p65) gives the father of William Browne (number 10) as John Suffield Browne. However, these errors have apparently resulted from confusion of two William Brownes who both died in 1814 and who are both commemorated by MIs at Burrough. One died in his 50th year and was the son of John Suffield Brown of Leasthorpe (so clearly cannot be the father of Mary Browne who was baptised in 1772) whilst the other died in his 85th year and was the father of Mary (Browne) Burnaby. See the MIs in Hill's "History of Market Harborough"]
