William Henry Burton , 1768 At General Election, William Burton (a firm anti -Unionist) and Beauchamp Bagenal returned for Carlow, an event celebrated in great style, according to Finn's Leinster Journal (July 20th) giving an "account of grand fireworks, illuminations and bonfires, being in that town last Monday night". Bagenal was a consistent supporter of Catholic Relief Bills and was present in the House of Commons when Henry Grattan made his declaration of independence. 1776 William Bunbury of Lisnavagh and William Burton of Burton Hall elected to represent Co. Carlow on 18th May, surviving allegations of undue influence made by the unsuccessful candidate, William Paul Warren, who withdrew his complaint before appointed day to hear his petition.*
