Ann Canning , "Melvyn Hirst" Ann James, formerly Greenwood formerly Canning, and her second husband John James, together with Ann's eldest brother Francis and a member of the Lacon family, were the defendents in a series of Chancery cases that ran from 1744 to 1754, the year of Ann's death. The Complainant was Ann's younger brother, Richard, a member of the Inner Temple, who tried to disinherit Francis and Ann on the grounds they were Catholics. John and Ann had no children and John died intestate. When John and Ann "married" he was a husbandman and she was the widow of the Lord of the Manor.
