William Cavendish , entertained James VI (and) I Stuart
(von Oldenburg ) 1566 - 1625 in 1633 at his seat, Welbeck; governor to Prince of Wales (1638-41); in Royalist cause invaded Yorkshire (1642), raised siege of Hull (1643); commander of all Royalist forces north ofthe Tyne; left England after battle of Marston Moor (1644); reduced to poverty; returned at Restoration (1660), restored to lands. Author of works on horsemanship.
