, He began business as a book seller in Edinburgh in 1818. In 1824, he produced "The Traditions of Edinburgh". He was the author of many essays and received an honorary doctorate from St. Andrews University in 1863. Co-founder of the firm W. & R. Chambers Ltd. and of Chambers Dictionary, with his brother.
