+ 1710

Christopher
Codrington
, a governor of the Leeward Islands, planter, slave owner, who bequeathed his two plantations in Barbados to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) for the training and practice of professors and scholars in Divinity and Physics. A Grammar School was opened on the site in 1745. This was the first educational institution on the property, and was the precursor to the present day Codrington College. An actual training college was set up on September 9, 1830, which is when its real life as a tertiary education institution began. The University of Durham granted degrees to Codrington students between 1875 and 1955. For a time, teachers were trained at Codrington too. Since 1971, degrees have been granted in association with the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies. The first institution of tertiary education in the English speaking Caribbean, Codrington has been training West Indians in classics, mathematics and theology for 250 years. The Codrington Trust, who are responsible for the endowment left by Christopher Codrington can be reached at Codrington College, St John, Barbados. He bequeathed his own collection of books plus £10,000 for a library to All Souls, Oxford.
