Sir Edward Coke 1552 - 1633
Sir Edward Coke , Lord Chief Justice of England. He acted the part of Crown's lawyer at the trials of the "Gunpowder Plot" conspirators. In 1606, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. He fell out of favour with the King for defending the Common Law as taking precedence over royal power. He wrote the "Petition of Rights" (1628).
