Thomas Coutts 1735 - 1822
Thomas Coutts , Partner in Coutts bank, 1761-1822. In her "Memories of the Arbuthnots", London, 1920, pp. 331-2, Mrs P S-M Arbuthnot relates how, in the the cataclysm of "Black Monday" (Edinburgh, 8 June 1772) the providential receipt by Messrs Coutts and Co. of £3000 in specie, which rumour described as 2 million sterling, meant that Coutts found themselves almost overwhelmed with cash deposits while other banks fell into general ruin from the rush to withdraw funds. She then points out that the partners in Coutts "rather than taking a selfish satisfaction" in the situation, extended helping hands to their less fortunate neighbours.
