, celebrated lawyer. English lawyer. Achieved prominence with memorial in support of East India Co. (1762) and defense of John Wilkes (1763-64); solicitor general (1768-70); M.P. (1768-82); author of famous Parliamentary resolution (April 1780) that "the influence of the crown has increased, is increasing, and ought to be diminished"; raised to peerage (1782).
