Charles Fowke 1805 - 1882
Charles Fowke , living in Glasbury, Brecon in 1849. of Braidwood, New South Wales, Australia, formerly of Newhouse, Llanstephan, farmer, subs. of Hay House, Wales, land surveyor (of Hay Union Workhouse). Surveyor (1841,51). He emigrated to Australia on the ship Swiftsure from Liverpool, arriving there on 29 Dec 1865 with his 2nd son, his daughter-in law Jane nee Ashfield, and their children - his two granddaughters Anna Fowke, subs. Green (1859-1948) and Elizabeth J. Fowke, subs. Robertson (1860-post/1897), and his 2 year old grandson Charles E. Fowke (1863-1957) - and his daughter Isabella Fowke, subs. O'Brien (1840-post/ca.1876), there to join his sister Elizabeth Bell (nee Fowke) (1809-82) in Braidwood, New South Wales. His eldest son Charles E. Fowke (1926-1904?) had emigrated one year previously with his wife & 5 children to New Zealand, and there became the Founding Ancestor of the FAMILY "FOWKE, formerly of Lyttleton, N.Z.". His 2nd son Edward Fowke (1835-1909) would become the Founding Ancestor of the a branch of the Fowke Family in Australia, name of the FAMILY "FOWKE, formerly of Braidwood, N.S.W.". Frank Rede Fowke " As a matter of fact Charles drank heavily and went utterly to the bad - he had to be sent out of the country." Other family historians have mistakenly thought he spent time in the workhouse. He was land surveyor for the Hay Union Workhouse which may explain the misunderstanding. In 1850 he petitioned in Chancery for a greater share in his father's estate, but the action was dismissed for want of prosecution, and Charles was ordered to pay costs. Cardiff and Merthyr Guardian, Glamorgan, Monmouth, and Brecon Gazette 10 July 1847 Parry v. Fowhe. — £ 5 5s. 2d.—This action was brought by the plaintiff, an innkeeper, residing at Bronyllis, in this county, against the defendant, Mr. Charles Fowke, who is a land-surveyor, residing at Boughrood, for the recovery of this amount for board and lodging, neces. saries and spirituous liquors, supplied defendant while staying at his house.—Mr. Pugh, who appeared for the defendant, submitted that under the Tipling Act plaintiff could not recover for the spirituous liquors supplied in quantities of the value of less than 211s, and in conse- quence his Honour directed the same to be deluded from the amount. Verdict for p\:iintitf ,£2 18s. ad., whereby plaintiff lost £"2 (5s. 9d. for giving the de- fendant credit, instead of insisting on payment of the articles at the time of delivery.—The amount was ordered to be paid by instalments of 5; per mouth. \Ve trust this will be a warning to publicans as to whom they trust in future. It is a most shabby way of getting jrid of one's debts, to say the least of it. Not mentioned in his brother Francis' will of 1826.
