Capt. John Fowke 1794 - 1851
Capt. John Fowke , of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, educ. Eton (Oppidan), Lieut. 68th Regt., served in "Peninsular War", wounded at the Battle of Vitoria (1813), served in Ireland until 1818, when he went on half pay. (1818 is when the regiment left for Canadawhere it stayed until 1829.) CLt., Officer 68th Regmt., of Northumberland Ct., Newcastle (1840). Sep. 1844, he was moved from the 68th Foot, to be Lieut. in the 19th Foot off half pay. (cf The United Service Magazine, Volume 46 p 158). He sold out before 1844, "He could not keep a farthing in his pocket". Cobbett's Political Register Vol. XXII, p247. His claim for the battle of Vittoroa was admitted by the Office for Military Bonds? by letter dated 14 Aug 1847 and his name included in their report then in preparation. When his 1st wife died in 1827, he retired to Antrim. In Aug 1849, he was at 3 Sanitary Place, Shield Field, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and in Oct 1850, he was living at 10 Northumberland Court, Newcastle upon Tyne. He was fair and blue eyed, musical with a high tenor voice and a clever draughtsman.
