William Albert Edward Giddings 1910 - 1978
William Albert Edward Giddings , Lived at 5 Stone Terrace, Stone St., Camb. Apprenticed to be a bookbinder at Heiffers (in Free School Lane?) but was made redundant after serving his seven years. He then attempted to make a living by cycling round the Cambridgeshire villages selling brushes until he found employment with Jarrolds Colour Printers at Norwich. He remained there until he moved to Watford to work at Odhams Printers in 1936. In 1941 he volunteered prior to call-up, so that he had the choice of service and joined the Royal Navy. He obtained a compassionate deferment of posting until after I was born on 31st August. He was posted to QDEMS, naval gunnery personnel seconded to merchant ships, and served on troopers (converted liners), tankers, etc and travelled all round the world earning a rare full house of general service medals,as it were. During this time he became very knowledgeable about astronomy. In latter years he suffered greatly with back problems and took voluntary redundancy from Odhams at age 64. Ill health took it's toll and he died in 1978 aged 67. (Doug Giddings b. 1941) Present at the 90th birthday celebration of Sarah Giddings.
