George
Giddings
  (Goodwin)
1609 - 1676

George
Giddings
(Goodwin), formerly of Clapham, Beds., England. Principal heir of his father who left about 30 acres of land. Described himself as a yeoman on his marriage bond, although on the embarkation papers, he is described as a husbandman. He emigrated with various members of his wife's family on the Planter, embarked 2 April 1635, at the Port of London. The ship left after April 11, 1635 and arrived in Boston on Sunday, June 7, 1635. Probably had Puritan sympathies. From "The Complete Book of Emigrants, 1607-1776"

Bedd, yeoman, and John Tuttle [George's future step-father-in-law] are bound for £100. . . 20 February 1633 [/4]. [In English] George Giddinge Batchelor & one Jane Lawrence of St Albans maiden are licensed to be married together; therefore there shall not hereafter appeare any lawful impediment…. And that the sd marriage be penty [presently?] solomised in the pish [parish] church of St Albans or St Peters And that between the howers of eight and twelve of the clock in the forenoone… (Hertford Record Office; Ref. no. ASA 22/1) The marriage of George "Goodwin" and Jane Lawrence was performed the same day at the parish church of St Peters, St Albans, Hertfordshire. (Source: St Peters Parish Registers, Hertford Record Office) There were two George Giddings baptised at Clapham at about the same period; the first was the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Russell) Giddings, baptised 1 November 1607 and the other was the son of John & Joan (Purrier) Giddings, baptised 24 September 1609. The evidence for the conclusion that the emigrant was the George baptised in 1609 is circumstantial. "Geo Giddins" is listed as twenty-five years old in the April 1635 passenger list. This fits the 1609 George who would not have been twenty-six for several more months. The other George was fully two years older. However, ages in passenger lists were often mere estimates by the recorder and ages provided for George Giddings of Ipswich, Mass., in later documents would have been appropriate for either child.
