Thomas Read Kemp 1782 - 1844
Thomas Read Kemp , Lord of the Manor, Magistrate and local Benefactor. MP for Lewes. Owner of Leeds Castle. Non conformist preacher. Owned the farmhouse that was to become The Royal Pavilion. Built 'The Temple',(now The Brighton & Hove High School for Girls)1819, and then went on to develop Kemp Town to the East of the town as a speculation. Despite initial success Kemp was increasingly dogged by financial problems and was forced to leave the country in 1837 in order to escape his creditors. Pigot's 1840 for Sussex Brighton with the village of Rottingdean and neighbourhood:Thomas Read Kemp, Esq. and Charles Scrase Dickens, Esq., are lords of the manor, and hold courts baron annually of oftener. Sussex Weekly Advertiser Monday, September 18th, 1809 Game Duty. An Alphabetical List of Persons who have obtained General Certificates for killing of Game in the County of Sussex, for the present Year, which List is made up to the 9th inst. Herstmonceux Place (now flats) (I) "The north-west front dates from the early C18.... In 1777 the house was enlarged by Samuel Wyatt for the Reverend Robert Hare (great grandfather of Augustus Hare), the bricks for the new portion being taken from Herstmonceux Castle. The north-east or entrance front was then remodelled.... Good staircase. From 1807-1819 the house was occupied by Thomas Read Kemp, the founder of Kemp Town, Brighton."
