Sir Charles Peter Layard , K.C.M.G. 1876, Government Agent Western Provinces of Ceylon; educ. St. John's Coll., Camb. MA (Cantab); Assistant in Colonial Office, Ceylon 1830 to 1832; Magistrate at Jaffra 1831-2; Assistant to Collector at Colombo 1832-9; District Judge at Galle 1839-40 and at Tricomalee 1840-50 and again at Galle 1850-1. Acted on three occasions as Colonial Secretary. "Layards Broadway", Colombo was named after him. Between January 1866 - June 1877, First Mayor of Colombo; 1878, Commissioner for Ceylon at the Paris Exhibition; awarded September 1871, C.M.G., 30 March 1876, K.C.M.G.. 1831, Fiscal & Sitting Magistrate, Jaffna; 10 December 1828, Ceylon Civil Service; 1832, Assistant to the Collector,Colombo; 1836, Assistant Government Agent,Colombo & District Judge, Kalutara; 1837, Assistant Government Agent,Colombo & District Judge, Negombo; 1837, District Judge, Negombo; 1839, District Judge,Galle; 1840, District Judge,Trincomalee; 1850, District Judge,Galle; 1851, Government Agent,Western Province; Retired in 1906.
