Charles Rushworth Lynch-Staunton , While a considerable tract of land, mostly wooded, primarily surrounding Clydagh House remained in the hands of the Lynch-Staunton family after the Land Acts of 1903, the surrounding townlands which they controlled had now reverted to ownership by their former tenants - the native Irish. Their Irish power-base was diminished, even though they still retained the notion of gentry and wealth. During the Irish Civil War in 1922 it was raided by a crowd of armed men (IRA), who set fire to the house, completely destroying it; only the outer walls, which were seriously damaged, being left standing. The owner, Charles. R. Lynch-Staunton, then an aged gentleman, was treated with exceptional savagery, being wounded and thrown into the lake. The housekeeper was also wounded and terrorized. Charles was so traumatised by the incident he left Ireland for good and settled in England.
