Nevill(e) Maskelyne , List of Officials at Accession of George I 1 August 1714 SOUTHERN DEPARTMENT Secretary of State Clerks Maskelyne, N. Of Purton Stoke, 1744. Of Wychwood, Oxfords. In 1713, he became Clerk in the Secretary of state's office firstly under the Tory, Henry St John, Viscount Bolingbroke, one time MP of Wooton Bassett, then under the Whig successor, Charles, Viscoutn Townshend. Neville relinquished the post in favour of his brother, edmund in 1716. In 1718, he was forced to sell the borough, hundred, and manor of Cricklade and much of the rest of his inheritance, including West Marsh, Purton. He retired to Down Farm, Purton.
