Rev. William Mason 1725 - 1797
Rev. William Mason , Educ. St John's, Camb. English poet.He had a nephew called William Dixon who died in 1854. He mader a short (and incomplete) catalogue of the music collection of the Minster at York ca 1780. Lived mainly in Aston. He owed an early Zumpe piano "Dr. Sterne's successor as Praecentor of York, William Mason, who became a prebendary of York in 1757. He became Praecentor in 1760 and canon residentiary in 1762. A man who fancied himself as a poet, musician, gardener and almost universal man of taste. A close friend of Horace Walpole's, he is recognised today as having been a much better critic than a performer in all these spheres. He was a staunch Whig, but befriended Catholics, particularly Edward Bedingfield of York, whose granddaughter married Charles Waterton, the traveller and eccentric taxidermist. Mason's pet hates were Tories and "coxcombs" and he wrote plenty of satirical verses against them. George may wel have qualified as one of them."
