Peter Moore , Total issue - 5 sons, 3 daus.MP for Coventry. Peter MOORE (1753-1828), who was a brother-in-law of W. M. “Sylhet” Thackeray and the great uncle and guardian of W. M. Thackeray, the novelist. Peter Moore obtained an appointment in the East India Company's service (through the friendship of his eldest brother, Edward Moore with Lord Holland and the Whig party). He married (8 Jan 1774) at Calcutta or (10 Jan 1774) at Patna (?) to: Sarah WEBB (1755–1797), dau of Lt-Col. Richmond Webb and sister of Amelia, who married: William Makepiece Thackeray – “Sylhet Thackeray” (1749-1813). Peter and Sarah Moore christened their two eldest sons Richmond (15 Jan 1776) & Edward (12 Jan 1777) at Calcutta. The remainder of their children were born in England. But Edward Moore returned to India along with three of his brothers – all in the E.I.C.S., where, with the exception of my g-g-grandfather Macartney (thank goodness!), they died s.p. These last (along with Edward) were: St John Moore and Thomas Perring Moore. And I'd really like to find more details on their lives in India and where and when they died. Macartney MOORE (1788-1831) – Collector in and around Agra between 1812 and 1819, married (25 Mar 1822) at Meerut to: Henrietta HALHED (1801-1837), ygst dau of John Halhed of Yateley, Hants and niece of; Nathaniel Brassey HALHED (1751-1830) – orientalist and grammarian, who arrived in Calcutta (1772) to work in the E.I.C. as a `writer'. He is credited with being the first to write a Bangla Grammar (1778). He also made a translation of the Upanishad (1787), after he had returned to England.
