Sir Jerom Murch 1807 - 1895
Sir Jerom Murch , Municipal activist. Diss.[enting] Minister (1841). Unitarian minister formerly of ?? Chapel, Bath (1851). Magistrate for Somerset (1861). Landowner and magistrate (1871); magristrate and Dep. Lt. and Alderman (1881). Cranwell House, perfectly placed on a south-western spur just two miles from the centre of Bath, was built by the fortunate Sir Jerom Murch, a Unitarian minister who arrived in Bath in 1833. Ill health forced his premature retirement at the tender age of 38, but he had married well and was to live - and prosper - for another 50 years, serving seven terms as mayor of Bath and winning both a knighthood and the accolade of the city's Man of the Century. Early in his career, he had been a pastor at Norwich on a measly £100 a year, but his wife, Ann Meadows-Taylor, was an heiress, which is how he was able to buy the land and build Cranwell in 1856. The building plan was copied from Inigo Jones's design for Widcombe House, which is also in Bath. Built in ashlar stone, it is divided into bays by pilasters, each of which carries a bold cornice and open parapet. It consists of two storeys, which again, is something of a selling point in this neck of the woods. --------- Bath: Jerom Murch (1807-1895), a Unitarian minister and philanthropist, provided important political support for the BRLSI. He moved to Bath in 1833 as minister to the Trim Street congregation but later in his life he became a radical Liberal politician and was Mayor seven times during the period 1863 - 1893. He was a great humanitarian and presided over what has been described as a great age of Victorian civic improvement in the city. -------------- A large 10 page abstract of title for property in Diss covering the period 1811 to 1877.
