Plen appt:Feb 21st 1940 later British Ambassador to Venezuela, diplomat in Mexico (1927-1930), Vatican (1930-1932), Baghdad (1932-1935), Spain/Madrid (1935-1937) and Berlin (1937-1939). While Counsellor and Chargâe d'Affaires at the British Embassy, Berlin, he reported the anti-Jewish atrocities on Kristallnacht and in the days that followed. He wrote: 'I can find no words strong enough in condemnation of the disgusting treatment of so many innocent people and the civilized world is faced with the appalling sight of 500,000 people about to rot away in starvation.'
