  formerly Francis Leslie Curtis, Why was he boarding aged 5 with the Brand family at the 1911 census? By this time - 1911, he is recorded under the surname Peters. In 1921 at the census he was boarding with the same people. He was working as an independent brokers' clerk at Hamilton Smith & Co Ltd at 2 Broad St EC. "His father having died in WWI, he didn't get on with his uncle who brought him up with his mother. This man was very strict and was a teacher." This story cannot be entirely true, but it is the story that was passed down. Leslie left home to join the army and attained the rank of Major, Queens Royal 1st Battalion serving in India and China etc.. subs. with Butterworth Publishers, retired May 1970. He and his wife were living in Shanghai at the time of their marriage. Before signing up, he worked in a bottle top factory. His regular army certificate of service book gives his trade on enlistment as Hydraulic Press operator. Army career: Enlisted 25th August 1924 in the Queen's Royal Regiment, Army no. 6082417. He stayed with the same regiment throughout his non-commissioned career. He was "at home" 25th Aug. 1924- 12th Apr 1927, in China between 13th April 1927 and 21st March 1929, then in Malta between 22nd March 1929 and 7th Oct. 1930, then back to China between 8th Oct. 1930 and 22nd Nov. 1934. Lastly he was posted to India between 23th Nov. 1934 and 14th May 1941 when he was appointed to a commission after sixteen years and 263 days with colours and a rank of Warrant Officer II (R.Q.M.S.) His army education was noted as 3 Class Certificate (9 Oct 1924), 2nd Class Certificate (18th Dec. 1924), 1st Class Certificate (16th March 1927).; Maths "B" and English "C" of Special Certificate March 1929. Passed in French for Special Certificate of Education 10th Oct 1934 and was awarded Army Special Certificate of Education in March 1937. He also passed a trade test for Clerk Group "6" Class IIIB Hong Kong 27th April 1938. During this 17 years, he performed clerical work in Battalion Orderly Room for the first 15 ending up as Orderly Room Warrant Officer 1939 (1 Queens Regiment). Then he spent 2 years as Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant in the same battalion. Both of these included running offices, drafting letters and orders, keeping store accounts and ordinary cash accounts. In May 1941 he was appointed to a Commission. He spent 2 years as adjutant of various units, the duties of which included drafting letters and orders, discipline military law, etc. Then he spent 6 months as a Group Commander of a Signal Unit which involced commanding and administering 200 B.O.Rs and 500 I.O. Rs with a proportionate number of junior officers. The next 6 months was as a Staff Officer (Grade III) on 15 Corps HQ. This involved staff work in connection with signal organisation and administration. In December 1943, he was posted to the Army School of Driving and Maintenance, India, Arangaon, Ahmednagar as Adjutant (Captain). He was appointed Senior Administrative Officer to the School from Sept. 1944 and promoted to the rank of major. His duties in this last appointment entailed the administration of some 300 British troops, 1,000 India Troops and 450 civilians. This was his last post in the Army. NHS no.
