Thomas (Diamond) Pitt 1653 - 1726
Thomas (Diamond) Pitt , Known as Diamond Pitt. English merchant. He owned estates in Cornwall. Carried on East Indian trade (from 1674) as interloper until East India Company, unable to check him in courts, received him into service (1694); governor of Madras (1697-1709); M.P. (1689-93, 1709 ff.); obtained Regent (or Pitt) diamond (1701), sold it (1717) to French regent to be placed with state jewels of France.
