  formerly Riley, He and his elder brother inherited the John Smith Brewery at Tadcaster, Yorks., from their maternal uncle William. A condition was that the two nephews should take the name Smith in addition to Riley. Frank stood back from an active role in the business. Appointed Lt. in 1st west Riding of Yorkshire. Rifle Corps. Volunteers on 15th Oct. 1884, aged 19. Some of his early years were spent in Australia and in South Africa. From 1897, he and his wife leased the Saxham Hall estate, and in 1900 he took the lease on Barton Hall, Great Barton, Suffolk. They moved in in Dec 1901. SUBJECT The document begins by reciting that a 99 year lease on property in Swinton, Yorkshire, was granted by the Earl Fitzwilliam to Joseph Bower in 1880. The lease on part of this property is now being assigned to Henry and Frank Riley-Smith for £1900. The property consists of 4 houses with shops (one of which is an off-licence) on a plot on the North side of the main road from Swinton to Doncaster. There is an intended new road immediately to the East of the plot. Note that Henry and Frank Riley-Smith are in partnership as Brewers at Tadcaster trading as "John Smith".
