Dr. Robert Scott 1758 - 1846
Dr. Robert Scott , of Forth Street, Edinburgh. Retired from the navy, he took up research in chemistry. Apothecary (1810). In 1824 he is a sole practitioner and later he was in partnership with James Orr. Druggist of Forth St (1834 - Male Heads of families 1834 (NRS Reference: CH2/139/1 pp. 149-156)). Druggist (1841). Scott, Robert druggist and apothecary, 100, South bridge, - house 18, Forth street (1805-34 Post Office Annual Directory) Scott and Orr, druggists, chemists, and apothecaries (1832-8 GRAY'S ANNUAL DIRECTORY. No. 67 PRINCE STREET ) Scott & Orr, Robert Scott and James Orr, druggist and apothecary, Edinburgh (1831). There were many apothecaries in Edinburgh in the 1840s. 1842 Edinburgh Directory, under the heading `Apothecaries, Chemists and Druggists' there are 53 entries. In Edinburgh one of the first chemist and druggist shops was opened by H. B. Wylie, Chemist and Druggist, 38-40 Grassmarket in 1797. Druggist in Edinburgh. There is another druggist in Edinburgh at this time called James Orr. There is a connection which may have given rise to many of Robert's children and descendants having Orr as a middle name. According to Pigot's Directory 1825-26, Under Apothecaries, there is "Scott & Orr, (& druggists) 100, South Bridge"
