Joseph George Walsh ante 1695 - 1731
Joseph George Walsh , In Sumatra, 1723. He landed at Fort Marlborough with a commission as deputy governmor. Free Merchant & in the service of the Hon. East India Co., Deputy Governor of Bencoolen & Sumatra. He was suspended 18 July 1726 and charges were brought against him of malversation of the Company's revenues. It's beyond doubt that he had indeed kept up his own credit as a merchant with monies so obtained. Of Hatton Gardens, London (1726). Arrived Fort St George Secr. to Gov. Pitt & "Keeper of the Keys" Fort St George (Madras), India, etc. in 1729 and was classed as a Senior Merchant, he was appointed Secretary to Government in success to George Torriano. He died "leaving a pretty fortune" of £3,500.00 to each of his three children. He was found to have "cooked the books" to the tune of £7000 which was reimbursed to Gnr. Pitt who had made up the shortfall from his estate.
