Gen. James Welsh , His grandmother was Grisel Elphinstone, dau. of the 9th baron. "Noel Purdon" Their first daughter Primrose Margaret m Capt. Charles ELPHINSTONE in 1810 at Madura. In 1826 they were in England, and Primrose with her two elder daughters Jane and Charlotte took out a bond to return to Madras on 12 April 1827. Lt.Col Charles died in Secunderabad, possibly of cholera (his father-in-law considered it one of the unhealthiest places in the sub-continent) on19 Aug 1831. Charles and Primrose's third daughter Emma marrried Lt Josiah WILKINSON at Vizagapatam on 19 April 1838. Emma gave birth to a son on 23 March 1839 and a daughter on 20 July 1840 at nearby Waltair, where the WELSH family had a house in which Sarah died 24 July 1839 . From 1829 to 1836 James (Welsh) was on furlough in England (see Elizabeth's note) with his immediate family, but obviously maintained contact with his daughters still in India. It is interesting that the Madras Register takes particular note of the births of his grand-children. Yet the exact identity of Chales ELPHINSTONE remains a mystery. He is definitely not the Charles cited by Elizabeth. His cadetship application was made in 1800 in London , and in the same year he was a lieut. with the 2nd NI. He was possibly the Capt ELPHINSTONE given an allowance for the shipping of treasure. His cadet reference is IOR/L/MIL/9/110/ 244 1951928. I would be most grateful for a look-up in O.I.O.C if anyone has time, with particular attention to his parentage.
