ORIGINS, etc:

Title in English peerage first held by a Fleming named Gherbod (c.1070), granted with palatine powers to Hugh of Avranches (q.v.) and held by members of his family until 1232. Title annexed to the English crown (1246), and held since 1254 by heirs apparent to the English crown.
