Robert Stuart 1533 - 1591
Robert Stuart , of Orkney. Sometimes called "of Strathdown". He was well educated and spent much time abroad between 1553 and 1561. Appointed Commendator of Holyrood in 1539 and Abbot of Holyrood, he conformed to the protestant faith in 1559, appointed Sheriff of the Orkneys in 1564 and was granted crown lands in Orkney and Zetland in 1565. In 1568 he forced Adam Bothwell, Bishop of Orkney to exchange bishopric revenues in Orkney for those of Holyrood Abbey. He was created Earl of Orkney in 1581.
