Col. John Fowke , of Drogheda. He came to Ireland as lieutenant-colonel in Colonel Anthony Hungerford's regiment of foot in April 1647... He was later appointed Commissioner of the Revenue of the Drogheda (later Trim) Precinct and as such played a principal role in the administration of Commonwealth affairs in County Louth for many years. In particular he supervised the arrangements for the land confiscations in the county and the removal of the forfeiting proprietors to Connaught albeit that it is probable that only a minority actually transplanted. A listing of the forfeiting proprietors of County Louth taken from a Commonwealth record dated 27 January 1656/7 gives eighty-nine names, many of them duplicated and includes also proprietors who were not resident in the county.6 It is also likely that it included deceased persons, or others transported abroad under Articles and that only a small proportion actually ....
