Joseph Angus , graduated MA from Edinburgh in 1837 after studying for the baptist ministry at Stepney College. After `accepting a call' to New Park Street Chapel, Southwark (later to become famous by its association with C.H. Spurgeon) in 1838, he became secretary of the Baptist Missionary Society. Angus was appointed President of Stepney College in 1849, a position he held until 1893. The degree of DD was conferred on him in 1852 by Brown University, Rhode Island. He published several religious works and held various positions as examiner in English. He was elected to the first London School Board in 1870. `As a theologian he was essentially conservative; in a controversy of 1870 he upheld the doctrine of eternal torments; he was not without mellowing influences in his later years'...
