Lt.Col. William Charles Lewis Bird formerly Lewis 1782 - 1850
Lt.Col. William Charles Lewis Bird formerly Lewis, became cadet in 1797, arrived in India 1798. According to Hodson's "Officers of the Bengal Army", he was born WILLIAM CHARLES LEWIS and was granted permission to assume the name BIRD on 15 Dec 1810, announced with great foresight by the London Gazette on 03 March 1809. [CvM note - maybe that was the issue in which it was reported rather than the effective date] In March 1809, the London Gazette announced the following: "The King has been graciously pleased to grant William Charles Lewis Esq., Capt. in the Military Service of the East India Company... that he and his issue my take the surname Bird, in addition to his present name of Lewis, with the consent of William Bird Esq., Major in the Royal West Middlesex Regiment of Militia. And to order that His Majesty's Concession and Declaration be registered in the College of Arms." The official name-change took place on the 15th December 1810, and yet no relationship can be found between the two gentlemen. Of Howland st Fitzroy Sq., London when he made his will. "Ian Wiggins" is looking for him. If he took the name as part of an inheritance from a close relative, we can assume that "Bird" died 1805-1809. there are 22 wills on the NA website site, none look particularly apt. "Director of the St. Albans and Hertford Railway." 1845
