Charles Andrew Bruce , In Penang - St. George's Church. The following memorial is tucked away inside the church, ("Prince of Wales Island" is now Penang). "Sacred to the Memory of THE HONORABLE CHARLES ANDREW BRUCE Brother of the Right Honorable Thomas Earl of Elgin and Kincardinr in Scotland Who departed this life the 27th Day of December 1810 aged 42 years. After being employed in the Civil Service of the Honble East India Company of the Bengal establishment for twenty seven years, he was selected by the Honble Court of Directors to be Governor of PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND where, with a virtuous uncorrupted heart, delighting in justice, mild, benevolent, pious, and sincere, he was permitted to rule for ten months only, when death deprived the settlement of his valuable services. The British Inhabitants of the island have erected this monument as a testimony of his public virtue and his private worth."
