A devoted admirer of Sebastian Bach; chief promoter of the scheme which resulted in the first performance in England of the `B Minor Mass.' Founded the Bach choir in London; one of the founders of the Mendelssohn scholarship, giving generous help to the first scholar, Arthur Sullivan. A warm supporter and friend of Grove at the Crystal Palace and South Kensington. Closely associated with Sterndale Bennett; a friend of Jenny Lind, and intimate with Rossini, Liszt and other famous musicians. Author, Eton in the Forties; translated the Life of Schubert; Goethe's Egmont; Hauptmann's Letters to Zelter. Died Oct. 29, 1913, aged 83, at 12, Cromwell Place, South Kensington. (King's Coll. Adm.
