Lt.Col. Charles James Coote , In 2001 a medal came up for auction "India General Service Medal impressed Lieut. Col. CHAS. JAS. Coote 18th RL. IRISH REGT., with PEGU bar, extremely rare commanding officer's medal. Charles James Coote was born in London 1814, of the well known Anglo-Irish landowning family. He obtained a commission by purchase as an Ensign in 1831 in the 69th Foot Regiment, later lieutenant 1834, captain 1837 by purchase, promoted to major 1847 and Lieutenant Colonel by purchase on November 10 1848. He exchanged to the 18th, Royal Irish Regiment on October 2 1849. In the 1852/3 Indian campaigns he was mentioned in despatches twice - thanked by Commodore Lambert RN for services in connection with attacks on stockades on the Rangoon River April 4-5 1852 and listed in a report of Lt. General Godwin of April 18 1852 as being one of the "brave men" in connection with his command of the "storming party" at Rangoon. He was severely wounded in this latter attack. He died in India on May 5 1853 and this medal was awarded posthumously! . With copies of official records, The London Gazette, photograph, etc. Good extremely fine with ribbon. Estimate: £1200/£150 "
