Sir Walter Elliot , Vice Chancellor of the University of Madras from 1859 to 1860. The Asiatic Journal for 1837 contains lists of civil appointments MADRAS - Mar 7 : Walter ELLIOTT Esq., to be Private Secretary to Right Hon. the Governor. - Commissioner for the administration of the Northern Circuits, 1845-54. Member of the council of the governor of Madras, 1854-60. Wrote articles on Indian natural history and culture. In 1804 as a country residence they rented the house of Fairnington on a short lease..... James Elliot married in 1800 caroline, daughter of William hunter of Plmodd, by Lady caroline MacKenzie, his wife. .... His eldest surviving son had gone to India the year before, (i.e. 1820), and in 1824 his wife died.... he married again... he died in February 1855, at the age of eighty four. ... Walter Elliot.... Lady Elliot (then Mrs Elliot) returned from India in 1859, and occupied Wolfelee House...... early in the year 1866 a good deal of excitement was caused to Rulewater among the young people by a rumour that Miss Elliot of Wolfalee was to be marraued to Captain W. Eliott-Loackhard, younger of Borthwickbrae and Cleghorn.,,, 1th April fixed for the event..... On the morning of the 11th April the bride's uncle the Rev.
