Fleming
, Father of Standard Time. of Montreal, Canada. Civil engineer and scientist, associated with the development of the Canadian railways. To Canada (1845); chief engineer of Inter-Colonial Railway (1867-76) and Canadian Pacific Railway (1872-80). Devised an internationally accepted scheme for standard time (1884) and a telegraph communication system for British Empire. Knighted in 1897.
