Joseph John Gurney , of Earlham hall. As rich as the Gurneys" : Joseph John Gurneys (1788-1847), the English Quaker, reformer, and banker, had become a byword for "wealthy man" by the 1870s when W. S. Gilbert wrote the sketch Trial by Jury for the 11 April 1868 issue of the comic magazine Fun.
