Elizabeth for mysterious relations with Mary, Queen of Scots; imprisoned for a time after publishing (1583) an attack on judicial astrology suspected of treasonable intent; lord privy seal (1604); commissioner at trials of Sir Walter Raleigh (1603), Guy Fawkes (1605), Garnett (1606); a commissioner of treasury (1612). Roman Catholic; founder of hospitals; framer of James I's edict against duelling; author of three apothegms in Bacon's collection; builder of Northumberland House.
