Thomas Howard 1585 - 1646
Thomas Howard , Earl Marshall. Noted for his collections of marbles and manuscripts. Patron of arts and learning; became Protestant (1615); privy councilor (1616); president of committee of peers on Bacon's case (1621; general of army against Scots (1639); as lord high steward presided at trial of Strafford (1641); escorted Queen Henrietta Maria to Continent (1642) and took residence at Padua. One of first large-scale collectors of art in England; collected statues, pictures, guns, coins, manuscripts, books, and the marbles, known as Arundel marbles, presented by his grandson, 6th Duke of Norfolk, to Oxford (1667). there is a portrait of him by Reubens in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
