Rev.Mr. James
Laurie
  (Lawrie)
1788 - 1852

Rev.Mr. James
Laurie
(Lawrie), Preacher in the United Secession Church (1827), Preacher of the Gospel (1841). Chaplain to Royal Infirmary (1844-52). He died whilst in the employ of the Royal Infirmary.
He was a minister of the Sucession church. Caledonian Mercury 17 May 1847 has an article covering the Union of the Secession and Relief Churches .... The Secession Synod...... called upon on the members... signify assent... 320 ministers .... Laurie, chaplain of the Edinburgh Royal Infitmary... The Rev. Laurie may have been the author of P.149. No. XX, Parish of Tinwald, for the Statistical Accounts of Scotland 1845. See GRO(S) ref. FR2119. If a standard naming scheme was followed, his father would have been called Simon or Thomas (Tom). There was a Thomas Laurie 1760-1843, Minister of Newburn.
Terregles "The church is situated as nearly as possible in the centre on the parish, and the manse about a mile to the southeast. To the west, there is a beautiful range of hills, part of which is covered with wood, and part affords excellent pasturage for sheep and cattle. From the top of these hills is seen, in great beauty and splendour, the town of Dumfries, which to the eye of the beholder, lies immediately below.... It extends from east to west about 5 miles, and at an average is about 3 in breadth. Its boundaries are, Holywood on the north; Troqueer on the south and east; Lochrutton on the west; and Kirkpatrick-Irongray on the north-west. " (Rev. George Heron, Minister) New Statistical Account, Blackwood.
The following piece is interesting since there is a family story of James Laurie arriving in Edinburgh armed with some silver bagpipes. It can't possibly be this James Laurie who features in the story, but the family tale may have been distorted in the telling.
On New-Year's Day, 1649, the following resolution was minuted:- "The Sessioune, resenting the great dishonour done to the Lord by sundry persons in the burgh not only abusing the creatures to excess of riot thro' drinking healths, but likewise in the height of their cups do calle for the drummer to beat the drum to them at every health, as they sinistrously term it, do henceforth dischairge the drummer to answer any persone whatever in such ungodlie demands, under the paine of inflicting upon him the sharpest measure of kirk discipline, and extruding him from his place withal." Three years afterwards, when the Commonwealth was set up, and some of Cromwell's soldiers were in the town, a professional musician, named John Laurie, craved leave from the Session "to exercise his calling of piping and playing;" but though he coupled his prayer with the patriotic condition that he would undertake never to play a spring to any of the interloping English, he found the court to be mercilessly unmusical. Conceiving "his former way of living to be useless and unnecessary," the elders "discharged him from henceforth to use the same," and required that he should "betake himself to some honest and lawful way of living."
[This refers to a different James Laurie: An inventory done dated 13 Sept 1869 refers to a James Laurie, a Doctor of Medicine residing in Rankeiller st., Edinburgh who died 29th May 1869. He also left a will. This James at his death had a wife, 2 sons named Charles Knox Laurie and Thomas Cassie Laurie and an eldest son called Ebeneezer Simpson laurie, whom he completely disinherits because he's already had more than his fair share. He inherited three properties from his father: A farm in Auchencrieff, Dumfriess, a farm in Terreglestown, Dumfriess. The third was an estate, with land, and included the Red Lion Inn - called LaurieKnowe. Post Office Directories: 1844-45 Rev James Laurie, city missionary, 6 Huntly Street 1852-3 Rev. James Laurie, city missionary, 4 Rankeillor Street.
