, Whig M.P. (1806); supported Catholic emancipation; Irish secretary (1827, 1828); succeeded to viscountcy (1829); home secretary under Grey (1830-34), employed in Ireland coercive measures. Prime minister (July-Nov. 1834 and 1835-41), eminently tactful political adviser of young Queen Victoria; opposed reduction of duties on imported grain; his firm stand averted war with France over Syria (1840).
